Chapter Eleven

A quick reminder that Sutton’s Place Brewery & Tavern, Sutton’s Seconds, and D&T Tree Service are taking a four-day weekend to celebrate a family wedding. “This is gorgeous, Gwen,” Molly said, spinning in a slow circle to take everything in.

The historic lakefront inn an hour north of Stonefield was a perfect wedding venue. Besides the stately white bed-and-breakfast and the water, there were flowers and lawns and arches and she knew the photographer was going to be ecstatic.

“We ran a little late,” Gwen said about their convoy of cars. “So once we get all the bags to our rooms, we’ll have to head straight out to the table. No messing around.”

When Gwen said there was no messing around, nobody messed around. They put their luggage on carts and took turns waiting for the two elevators. Her room was simple, but pretty and bright, and she wanted to flop onto the bed and enjoy it, but she couldn’t be late to Gwen’s bachelorette party.

A lot of ideas had been floated for the party, with everything from strippers to a weekend in Vegas on the table. Stonefield didn’t have strippers and none of them could really afford to fly to Las Vegas for a weekend, so they’d stopped trying to make it spectacular and gone instead for an evening that would make Gwen happy.

Under a canopy lit by fairy lights and electric candles was a long table where Gwen and the women she loved were going to have a five-course dinner served to them. None of them had to cook or clear the table or wash the dishes. There was no loud music to shout over or games to play. Gwen just wanted to spend the evening before she got married enjoying the company of her mother and sisters, Laura, and Molly, who was kind of a fake sister.

She did the fake thing pretty well, Molly thought.

“Have I thanked you ever so much for getting married while I’m so very pregnant?” Mallory asked Gwen once the dinner plates had been cleared and they were waiting a few minutes before having dessert brought out. There had been a lot of food.

“Only two dozen times,” Gwen replied. “So for the twenty-fifth time, they had two openings, and it was either a very pregnant matron of honor or a newly postpartum matron of honor juggling my bouquet and a screaming newborn.”

“Yeah, pregnant’s better,” Mallory admitted while the rest of them laughed because this wasn’t the first or even fifth time they’d had this conversation.

“I’m waiting for Irish to call a time-out during the ceremony,” Evie said. “So Mallory can sit and put her feet up for a few minutes.”

Gwen, who had just taken a sip of her cocktail, almost choked and Ellen gave her a couple of thumps on her back.
